There is a stretch of ground next to Waterloo Bridge on the Southbank side of the river, right opposite the National Theatre. There it truely feels like my little studio. I can spend endless hours in there dreaming up thousands of different photos, each feeling as fresh as the first one.

On Monday I took an exceptionally long way back home. I smiled as I walked across the stage and watched the characters lose themselves in my script. The man holding the pole was waiting for his cue to enter, the others were trying hard to perfect their act.

My brain has reached total silence. I am closing in on my senses. I'm feeling the light of the persistent sun on the right side of my eye. It wants me to come out and play and is patiently waiting. Slowly it is giving up and going to sleep.

The thought of a familiar breath on my face is the only thing amusing me while I realise that the sun is not coming back for some time.

Tomorrow another journey awaits me; another projet, another location. When I first left Amman many years ago, little did I know that my journey would be more than a return ticket.

Sometimes I get the feeling that I had one too many homes-away-from-home, one too many train journey's in the 'out direction', or just one too many nights away from home. Yet the rush I get when I start wondering why the little boy who used to play 'sab3 7jar' in the roads of Umm Utheina is waiting for a late flight in Nice airport keeps me wondering what is going to happen next.

This weekend I travelled to the moon and back without leaving my room.

2 weeks ago I went through the nightmare of trying to find a place to live, and 1 week ago a went through the nightmare of moving. Through out, a very familiar voice kept assuring me that I will find something nice and that it will all be worth it. Looking at the view from the window on the top floor prooves to me that the voice was right all along ..

What was going in Conrad Schumann's mind minutes before this famous jump is something that only he can understand.

You are a soldier on the East German side of Berlin, you have been given the task of ensuring that no one crosses to the other side. You've been given a rifle to enforce that directive.

Yet, something inside you tells you that want to break out ....

A an amusing thought turns into a more serious one. You look at the other side, but shake your head in denial. You look again, but this time focus harder. The amusing thought turns into a small step in that direction.

Before you know it, you are walking. No more hesitant steps, but steady foreceful ones. Your steps become faster. You start running. You reach the border, jump, and through the rifle away. You don't look back and hope that the only man shooting is that Camera man.

You break out ...

To me, the photo has nothing to do with politics, but with a man's struggle to break out, leave everything behind and leap into the unknown ... hoping for the best ...

The Writer

It is captivating how simple things like a chair and a desk can mean so many things, more so to Giancarlo Neri's, the creator of this piece of art, who in his own words attributed it "to the loneliness of the writer".

He describes writers as "prisoners of their desks, of the confinement that it requires to actually write about the outside world. The idea was to reverse that sense of captivity and put the writer on public display."

Standing underneath that structure, it is a contradicting feeling of majestic simplicity that hits me. Yet, it is more the fact that you can hide underneath the table without feeling out of place that brings me back to Hampstead Heath ...

That Friday feeling

It is sweet and very similar to the feeling that I used to have as a kid when the final bell rang and I got to go home after school on Wednesdays (Thursdays at later stages in my life) ....

As time moved on, and I started working, I realised that it's anything but a feeling of freedom. Why should I wait til Friday to feel free? Why shouldn't I be able to leave the office at 10:30 on Tuesday if I felt that I did enough to deserve it? Why should Monday be so depressing? Our hours have changed to suit the corporate time table. I think I'll fight it and try to have that Friday feeling on Tuesday morning (Monday is holiday) ...

With my head down attempting to find something to read while the Tube driver explained why we were delayed, and just when I thought London was going through one of its moods again ... it surprised me ...

The Hammersmith & City Line has a stretch that goes over ground right after Edgware station ... the tube window looks directly into the west ... there ... the sun managed to sneak underneath the clouds and colour the whole blanket orange ... it was a relaxing end-of-days feeling that made me forget everything else .. .even my tooth pain ... so I picked up my phone ....

The 24th

The 24th is not proving to be a better day to blog than the 23rd. Endless droplets of rain passing by my window ... London is again (like a good friend once told me) showing its authority and proving that it can do whatever it wants ... even if that meant raining all day in the middle of August after a normal sunny day.

London is an Interesting city ... to me it's a 'she' ... graceful and accommodating, yet in some occasions she lets go and starts getting into her London moods, moods which no one in the city can dare to ignore. No one felt the pain of the bombing as much as London did ... she stood still that day ... as if trying to make sense of it all ...

Amman in comparison changes on an hourly basis ... yet between 2 and 3 in the morning she beats London in her grace and Paris in her beauty ....

Today is not the best day to start blogging ... 23/8/2005 ... a very random summer day and the weather is playing along by being very neutral and predictable. Lunch wasn't too good. It feels like time is standing still, as if it wants to give me a chance to catch up.

It's just not the day to start blogging ... I should be working ... I've been given a chance here to do something good, yet my mind is somewhere else ... my mind is all over the place, except where it should be. I blame the weather, the bad lunch, and the e-mail I'm waiting for from my colleague ...
